Used for small production tasks like staking, riveting and installing or removing bearings, arbor presses are manually operated shop tools that can create a high amount of pressing force. These tools feature a metal ram or rack that is brought down onto an object. The heavy-duty ram is oriented vertically and moved by means of a rotating lever. Arbor presses are vital tools in machine shops and elsewhere. The press is generally bolted to a work bench, for it is much smaller than related tools like a hydraulic press. They are used for small-scale production or assembly work.

Made entirely of cast and forged metal, this type of press can weigh 100 pounds or more. The vertically positioned ram or rack typically features a rounded or square flat bottom. The press consists of four basic parts: the body, the handle assembly, the plate and the rack. The shape of the body differs according the design of the press, but it's typically made of cast metal and features bolt holes for attaching to a work bench. The handle assembly and rack attach to the upper portion of the body, while the removable plate mounts on its foundation.

The rack or ram is the vertically-moving component that actually does the pressing. The rack features one toothed side which allows the internal gears to grab and move it. With relative ease, an operator turns the handle as the rack applies up to several tonnes of force onto a piece of metal. This tool is rated to generate anywhere from one-half to five or more tonnes of maximum force. Some of the tasks for which an arbor press is best suited include flattening, stamping, bearing removal, shaping or small-scale metal repair.

If you need more or less force for a given task, you can adjust the leverage ratio . The most leverage is gained by extending the handle entirely to one side of the gear. By contrast, the least amount of leverage is gained with the ends of the handle equidistant from the center gear of the assembly. The more leverage, the easier it is to apply greater force.
